The Township of Washington as we know it today was established in 1894 and lies now just 3.25 square miles. The township was originally established in 1840 and was approximately 30 square miles until the municipalities of Emerson, Hillsdale, Montvale, Park Ridge, River Vale, Westwood and Woodcliff Lake were formed.

The population in the Township of Washington is approximately 10,245. We are mostly a residential community with only a shopping center (home of our second branch). It has a supermarket and about 20 smaller stores such as banks, a pizza place, an ice cream shop, etc.

Township of Washington has a regional school system with its neighboring town of Westwood. There is one high school (grades 7-12) in addition to 5 grammar schools. There is also the YWHA, which has classes for children pre kindergarten. Within the towns borders there is an all girl catholic high school. Girls come from all over Bergen County and Rockland County to attend.
